Dance Poems

Few things can match the beauty of dance, except maybe a few lines of poetry to describe it...

We dance for laughter,
we dance for tears,
we dance for madness,
we dance for fears,
we dance for hopes,
we dance for screams,
we are the dancers,
we create the dreams.

Albert Einstein

Dance like there's nobody watching,
Love like you'll never be hurt.
Sing like there's nobody listening,
And live like it's heaven on earth.

William W. Purkey

My mentor, my father, my priest
My tool, my love, my home
Where I find myself
Without judgement, so pure

An open soul
Transcending illusion
Freedom and beauty
Unbound by time and space

A silent call
Gently touching, reaching,
Inviting others to join
The fullness of life

I hope you dance

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder
You get your fill to eat but always keep that hunger
May you never take one single breath for granted
God forbid love ever leave you empty handed
I hope you still feel small when you stand by the ocean
Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens
Promise me you'll give faith a fighting chance
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
I hope you dance

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance
Never settle for the path of least resistance
Living might mean taking chances but they're worth taking
Lovin' might be a mistake but it's worth making
Don't let some hell bent heart leave you bitter
When you come close to selling out reconsider
Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
I hope you dance

Lee Ann Womack

I praise the dance, for it frees people
from the heaviness of matter and binds the isolated to community.
I praise the dance, which demands everything:
health and a clear spirit and a buoyant soul.
Dance is a transformation of space, of time, of people,
who are in constant danger of becoming all brain, will, or feeling.
Dancing demands a whole person,
one who is firmly anchored in the center of his life,
who is not obsessed by lust for people and things
and the demon of isolation in his own ego.
Dancing demands a freed person,
one who vibrates with the equipoise of all his powers.
I praise the dance.
O man, learn to dance,
or else the angels in heaven will not know what to do with you.

Saint Augustine

'Tis not enough that ev'ry Stander-by
No glaring Errors in your Steps can 'spy;
The Dance and Music must so nicely meet,
Each Note must seem an Echo to your Feet;
A nameless Grace must in each Movement dwell,
Which words can ne'er express, nor Precepts tell...

Soame Jenyns

I am a dancer.
I twirl, leap, and spin.
I jump, pirouette, and tap.
I am a dancer.
I feel pain and fear.
I feel defeat and failure.
Yet, I keep going.
I smile, I practice, I perform.
I have grace and beauty.
I do not dance because I am happy,
I am happy because I dance.
I hear the applause.
I perform and do my best.
Sometimes I fail.
I don't give up.
For I am a dancer.
I am brave and strong.
I dance not for fame and glory.
But for how I feel inside.
I am happiness, joy, love, and excitement.
Strife, talent, joy.
Determination and beauty.
I am a dancer.

Dance is a part of me
I don't dance with my feet
I dance with passion & with my heart....
There's not one day I don't dance
At times I'm dancing
And then someone is looking at me
Like I'm weird
And I just smile an embarrassed smile
Dance is who I am not what I want to be
It comes to me naturally from my heart

God is a DJ
Life is a dancefloor
Love is the rhythm
You are the music

Rock your own style
Dance your own beat.
And don’t forget to move your feet.

I dance for many reasons,
all throughout the seasons.
I dance because it’s fun,
with different genres for everyone.
You can always find me at dance,
where I will spin like a top and prance.
I dance because it’s what I love to do,
it’s a challenge but lots of fun too!

Hannah Broussard, age 12

I'm a dancer
I turn, I leap, I fall, I weep.
I sweat and bleed, I fear and cry
But dancing is my life.

I practice and perform
I hope and believe.
But I'm not the dancer
I'm not an artist either.
I'm a different type of audience
I'm a puppet to my feet.
But when I get the chance,

I dance

for it makes me feel free.
Free from all the heartbreaks
free from all the tears.
Another day, another dance
everyday of the year.

But what is dancing?
Dancing is the music
that no one else can hear.
Dancing is my heart, my soul
my world and my goal.
Dancing is me
for I'm a dancer.
